Koninklijke Harmonie Sinte-Cecilia Zele (Bélgica)![]() HISTORY OF THE BAND The Symphonic Wind Band was founded in 1830, the same year that Belgium was recognized as an Independent European State. However, there is evidence to suggest that there was a musical group in Zele before the French occupation, hence the motto: “Phoenix ex cinere suo renascitur” [The Phoenix will rise from its ashes]. In 1906 the title “Royal” was granted to the band. The appointment of Dirk De Caluwe as conductor in 1987 was the beginning of an intense and prosperous collaboration, which has resulted in the splendid Symphonic Wind Band we know today. The main objective of our current director, Georges Moreau, is to maintain the present level of excellence, and explore new directions for the band while keeping their own musical style. Throughout the years the orchestra has won numerous prizes, such as the gold medal from the city of Antwerp. They have also made various trips abroad to places such as Germany, France and Italy. We have proven our talent over the past four years by obtaining the highest ranking in the bi-annual competition held by VLAMO [Flemish Association of Music Bands and Musicians]. We continue to organize concerts and have never forgotten to celebrate our patron Saint Cecilia on the first weekend in December with a concert on the Friday; a visit to our members, a mass and a party on the Saturday; and on the Sunday, and again on the Monday, we organize a tour of the town and a banquet for all the musicians and honorary members. In 2005 our one hundred and seventy-fifth anniversary was celebrated with a fantastic concert along with other festivities. Our magazine “The Phoenix” has been in publication since 1991. We have recorded of our own music, for example Ceciliade. A DVD, which recounts our history and shows a selection of celebrations and various rehearsals, was published to celebrate our one hundred and seventy-fifth anniversary. Today we have five bands playing different music: “Maxamuzi” (Maximum Fun for Children through Music); a “beginners” orchestra; a youth music band; the symphonic wind band; and the “Kliek” of our percussionists and bugle players. Each of these has its own conductor and rehearsals. Several of our musicians are both conductors and composers, such as Bart Picqueur, who composed the Symphony No.0, The Battalion of the Broken Shoes. s far-a-field as Spain famous conductors can be found who started their careers in our orchestra in Zele, such as Frank De Vuyst. With our committee of advisers (President, Vice President, Treasurer, Secretary, and various other members), the technical team and our 500 honorary members, we are one of the largest organizations in the municipality. Sociedad Musical “Ruperto Chapí” de Villena (Alicante)![]() HISTORY OF THE BAND Founded in Villena on the 19 May 1993, the “Ruperto Chapí” Music Society was created with the firm intention to promote culture by fostering, teaching and communicating musical art, specifically band music, a field with deep roots in the popular culture of the Valencia Region and to which many generations have dedicated their time. When naming the music society, homage was paid to the exceptional musician Ruperto Chapí Lorente, who was born in Villena. The band was created with many hopes and aspirations, while bearing in mind that another group existed in Villena, the Municipal Band, which, as their name suggests, are affiliated with the Town Council. As a result, the twenty founding musicians knew the project would be hard work, but nevertheless they created, without any external help or subsidy, the administrative framework to operate independently under the protection of their own statutes and applicable legislation, and in so doing they contributed to the difficult task of modernizing music bands. The work of the band over the past 15 years has had positive results, creating a varied repertoire which continues to increase year on year, and an active concert schedule both within Villena and in other cities with which they carry out cultural exchange visits. In 2003, to coincide with their tenth anniversary, they made their first appearance at the International Band Competition in Aranda de Duero (Burgos), followed in 2005 by an appearance at the Alicante Provincial Competition, where they won second prize, followed by a further appearance at the International Band Contest City of Valencia.. In 2007 they again won second prize at the Alicante Provincial Competition, and in December they won first prize from the Fuente la Higuera Council, in the Band Parade. As well as collaborating with Valencian Television on their Channel 9 series Una Música, un poble, they have recorded three CDs. Currently they have 70 active musicians, the majority of whom are young and belong to the society’s music school, which since 1994 has been progressively increasing its number of students and teachers, and which provides additional funding for the band. All of these activities, as well as those carried out by the school band, auditions, chamber groups, and the forming a few years ago of a Big Band, complete the music society’s varied and extensive cultural offering. They have played abroad, especially within Spain and France, with considerable success and to great applause, particularly their performance in May 2000 at the European Parliament. In May 2006 they took part in the I International Competition of Vila Franca de Xira where 37 bands from Portugal, Spain, and Italy took part and they achieved third place in the first category. Banda de Tubas De Valencia (Valencia)![]() HISTORY OF THE BAND Creating a tuba band was one of David Llácer’s long-term goals. His dream became a reality in 1990 when he founded, arranged and directed the tuba band in Tenerife, the first tuba band in Spain, which he led until 2002. The Valencia Tuba Band was created in 2000 in the Valencia Youth Music Workshop, also under the initiative of David Llácer. It is made up of contrabass, bass and tenor (euphonium) tubas and seeks to demonstrate to society the enormous technical and musical potential of these instruments, to unite tuba players and create a favorable environment that encourages, by means of concert meetings, the enthusiasm of its members, who range from intermediate level students to renowned Spanish professionals. David Llácer’s dream was capped off in 2004 when the Balearic Island Tuba Band was created as a consequence of his work in the Balearic Islands Superior Conservatory where he is an associate instructor. The Valencia Tuba Band gives only one or two concerts every year due to the difficulty involved in uniting the large number of tuba players in the group, who are scattered all over Spain.
